Disenchanted by her hectic New York City lifestyle, Disbrowe, a former travel writer, packed her bags and moved to Texas Hill Country to become the chef at Hart & Hind Ranch. The dishes she created there combine her love for Mediterranean food with fresh local ingredients and cooking traditions from south-central Texas, with recipes such as Texas Tofu Scramble, and Eggs over Polenta with Serrano-Spiked Tomato Sauce. Also included in the Ranch Breakfast section are more traditional recipes like Blackberry Blue Corn Muffins and Banana Bread. Other sections included are "Charming Sandwiches and a Belt-Busting Burger," which feature Smoked Turkey Wraps with Chipotle Cream, and a Venison Burger. In the chapter "Ring the Dinner Bell" are fun, and simple dishes like Halibut with Salsa Verde and Cowgirl Steaks with Pink Peppercorns and Red Onion Marmalade. Throughout, Disbrowe shares various tales from life on the ranch (from raising baby chicks to living with a pet goat). Disbrowe's goal, she explains in her intro, was to write a cookbook "about fresh, satisfying food that is easy enough to prepare while living life to the fullest." In this she has succeeded. (Mar.)

2No Cowgirl Worth Her Salt Cooks Like This   Nov 21, 2007
I was born and raised in the Kansas heartland. I lived for 30+ years in Texas before moving back home to live on the Kansas prairie. I got excited over the reviews and possibilities I envisioned coming from this so called cookbook. Boy, was I disappointed. My first (and Very correct) impression right off the bat was.. "Where does this girl come from? New York City?" and guess what!

Yep, this girl is from New York. Everyone knows most New Yorkers don't know squat about picante sauce let alone cowgirl cooking. Just because you put a Western sounding handle on the receipe doesn't make it worthy chuck. The receipes sound like food you'd find on a high priced Dude Ranch.

It might make for cute reading, but if you're serious about Western ranch, trail or farm cooking then look elsewhere for REAL receipes. No cowboy in his right mind wants food with the ingredients in this book.

Ask any working Western man or woman and they'll tell you that they want "meat & taters" or other fare that they can sink their teeth into and do a hard day's work on. No cowgirl worth her salt cooks like this! The bright colored photos and cute tidbit stories make it an attractive looking book, but as a cookbook it's a disappointment as Big As Texas!

Now this is a cookbook!!!! You feel like you really know this gal. I haven't any other cookbook like it in my collection. Very down to earth and shows her quirky sense of humor. Recipes are delicious and something different than the "meat and potatoes" usual in my kitchen. I have already ordered several to give as gifts.

3It didn't excite me...  May 21, 2007
I picked up this book after a review in Rachel Ray's magazine. To be honest, this book didn't thrill me. The recipes contained many hard to find ingredients and seemed a bit frou frou to me.

I enjoyed some of the pictures, but found the pictures of people to be a little much. When I read cookbooks I'd rather have pictures of food. I did think the dog photo was cute, 'tho.

I found this book to be merely ok. I was surprised I didn't like it more.

5This is a great book!   May 12, 2007
I love the authentic, real-life stories, and the recipes are a super collection of easy to more detailed ingredients and steps.

Yes, this lady knows Texas and its love of food.

I am a native New Yorker who has been a Texas resident for 16 years. My new daughter-in-law is a native Texan who has inherited a working ranch. This book was a perfect gift for her. The recipes are awesome, the pictures are fantastic and the personal stories were great. I loved it because the book and the author were cosmopolitan, contemporary, earthy and promoted being sustainale. Boots, belt buckles, denim, diamonds, high heels and great food - a combination that works for me!
