Not only did she work at Def Jam and Capitol Records but she shares a daughter with hip-hop superstar Nas -- a relationship made extremely public through Nas's celebrity status, rap lyrics, and the ever-present media. Now, in It's No Secret, a strong, resilient Carmen bares all, telling her side of the story and leaving no detail unturned -- with the true candor and raw emotion of someone who has been there, done that, and survived. From a clandestine relationship with Nas's biggest rival, Jay-Z, that stirred up the biggest feud in hip-hop history, to seeing her reputation in tatters and a once loving relationship with Nas fall apart, Carmen depicts her trying journey to become the strong woman and mother she is today. After years of turmoil that included drugs, sex, greed, and violence -- and abandoning what she had always prized above all, her freedom -- Carmen took a stand, focusing on herself. After years of pursuit by the media, Carmen sets the record straight in It's No Secret -- and has no regrets. | | | |

Not a good book, but not a bad one either Aug 03, 2010 When this book came out, I had major reservations. There had been a number of "tell-all" books that came out (i.e. "Superhead") and I didn't care about people's exploits behind closed doors being exposed. But I read the preface of this book on Amazon, became tuned in and bought the book.
The book is a 260 page retrospective on Carmen Bryan's relationship with two of the biggest East rap stars, Nas and Jay-Z. And I will admit, it was a definite page turner if you are into the NY rap scene. She also talks about her life (pre-Nas) and other relationships with men in her life, including Allen Iverson. The book jumps around a lot, but you get the gist of her life and her relationships.
I will give Carm points for her honesty about herself. She understands the decisions she made had consequences. She knows what she's done in her life and makes no apologies. But it loses a tons of points because the story just jumps around from one episode to the next. There's not much depth with the story. This book would've been a real read if she had gone more in depths about her relationships - let us know why she made her decisions, what triggered certain behaviors, and what changes (if any) she made in her life. Also, she should've gone into more emotional/intimate details about her relationship with Nas & Jay-Z, whether they were bad or good. And the biggest omission of the book was how her and Iverson stopped seeing each other. What happened? She builds this story about him, but all of a sudden he disappears from the book. What happened? I understand there are some details that she couldn't reveal, her story gets cut off way too many times and the reader is left with a ton of questions.
Although I'm left a bit disappointed with the story, the book was a decent read - particularly since I'm a fan of NY hip hop.
WOW!!! I couldn't put it down! May 05, 2010 Finally some truth to all the rumors! This is a great book and Carmen has a great story to tell. We at home view celebrities/rappers so different. This book shed alot of light on their true character. Great Book! Must Read!
WOW !!! Apr 05, 2010 I can't believe it. I never knew must of this stuff. I had to download the songs in question because I had never heard them. I even looked up the lyrics online. I loved the book. It was great. I'm just shocked by some of the things mentioned. If you want to find out, you must read.
It's No Secret... Okay Mar 31, 2010 The book was alright. I like the fact that she said it plainly and seemed to be open and honest. Not as shocking as Karrine Steffan's book but close.
couldnt put it down Mar 22, 2010 i really enjoyed reading this book i couldnt put it down. its crazy how the lifes of people in or associated with the music biz get down
