In 1879, Steve Dancy sells his New York shop and ventures west to explore and write a journal about his adventures. Though he's not looking for trouble, Dancy's infatuation with another man's wife soon embroils him in a deadly feud with Sean Washburn, a Nevada silver baron.

Infuriated by the outrages of two hired thugs, the shopkeeper kills both men in an impulsive street fight. Dancy believes this barbarian act has closed the episode. He is wrong. He has interfered with Washburn's ambitions, and this is something the mining tycoon will not allow.

Pinkertons, hired assassins, and aggrieved bystanders escalate the feud until it pulls in all the moneyed interests and power brokers in Nevada. Can the former city slicker settle accounts without losing his life in the process?

5a clever western  Aug 02, 2010
This is a great story. It reads fast. It holds your attention. Unlike most books, it is not a rehash of tired plots. It is well written. I rarely give a book five stars, but this deserved. I have now read all of his novels. This one is the best. If you like a fun read, this is it.

5Great story and characters.  May 21, 2010
This book is an excellent work of fiction that occurs in the old west, however it's far from being a western. This book conjurs up images as you read it. I can see Sam Elliott as the Pinkerton Captain and Robert Duvall as the hired sharpshooter, and maybe an unknown as the main character who is from NYC but he's different than a typical city resident and enjoys the outdoors. He's doing more than the typical journey to seek adventure in the west. It's a very enjoyable read. Generally I prefer historical fiction but I'll be looking for this authors next book.

I enjoyed this book very much and had to have the sequel. I couldn"t put it down. The characters are so real you feel as though you are traveling along with them thru the stories.

5Great story telling at its best!!!  Apr 06, 2010
This story grabs you from page one, I couldn't put it down and was sorry when the story was over. Even though it is a western it is great story telling at its best, corruption, romance, and internal struggle of the hero. The plot is unpredictable and that keeps you hooked in thinking - wow what's going to happen next? The characters are diverse and we see their goodness and their faults and that makes us feel so very human and enjoy the story.

4A great escape!  Mar 26, 2010
My daughter gave me this book for my birthday and though I don't normally read westerns, I really enjoyed this one. The characters were fleshed out and the story a nice escape. Recommended!
