In 1879, Steve Dancy sells his New York shop and ventures west to explore and write a journal about his adventures. Though he's not looking for trouble, Dancy's infatuation with another man's wife soon embroils him in a deadly feud with Sean Washburn, a Nevada silver baron.

Infuriated by the outrages of two hired thugs, the shopkeeper kills both men in an impulsive street fight. Dancy believes this barbarian act has closed the episode. He is wrong. He has interfered with Washburn's ambitions, and this is something the mining tycoon will not allow.

Pinkertons, hired assassins, and aggrieved bystanders escalate the feud until it pulls in all the moneyed interests and power brokers in Nevada. Can the former city slicker settle accounts without losing his life in the process?

3The Shopkeeper  Feb 12, 2010
Nice read. This is my first western and I was impressed with the light and easy writing style. A simple story line presented well.

4good story, not great writing  Jan 19, 2010
I just finished this book on my kindle. If there were an option to pay after reading based on the quality, $4.99 wasn't bad but I would have rather gotten it free. At first I was dismayed by the simplistic and elementary writing style but after giving it 2 or 3 chapters, I became more interested in the story than the style. It was fun and the characters were interesting and I thought it moved along pretty well. Not a super predictable ending which I was happy about. I doubt if I'd pay to read another of this authors books but I may borrow from the library. A quick, fun, lite read.

5Great Read  Dec 19, 2009
I can't say that I'm big reader of the Western genre. I'm more of a fan of historical fiction. But this title caught my eye after browsing on Amazon. I have to say that I loved this book. It is a very entertaining read. Well written. I never write reviews, but wanted to endorse this one. I've already purchased Jim Best's sequel "Leadville."

2not bad, but not great  Nov 17, 2009
I was disappointed, after reading other reviews I was expecting a better story. It is well written, and easy to read, but just not exciting at all. The characters were uninspiring, the plot was boring. Not worth my $11, or whatever it was I paid for it.

5loved this book  Nov 09, 2009
I usually don't read westerns, but somehow I decided to read this book. Loved it!
